B O D Y; physical looks, traits, style of dress.
Marilaine walks with the confidence of someone who knows their own self-worth. It is surprisingly jarring and immediately noticeable because she is a "city" elf from Orlais. She has the slender build of an elf with a lithe, willowy frame accentuated with just enough curves and lines to give her a healthy physique. Her naturally bronze skin is tanned even further by an active outdoor life. Beyond the points of her ears and the tread of her step, the next obvious thing about her is her dark brown hair. It is cut in an asymmetrical bob with the long fringe loosely framing the left side of her face down to just past her shoulder. Cobalt blue eyes observe the world as a whole, unflinching and vaguely challenging to those around her.
Her face is completed by a series of long healed scars that mark her right eyebrow, left cheek and lips. They are all worn as a badge of pride and a reminder of a life she left behind. Other scars are hidden away under her clothes, though none are as prominent as the ones on her face.
She usually dresses in serviceable outdoor clothes, cloth, and leather both weatherworn and patched carefully, though she is not slovenly or unkempt. Very little jewelry adorns her beyond a few bits of wood and rock tied about her neck with a leather thong. Besides the clothes on her back, she also has a knapsack, full of things needed to survive in the wilderness along with a few precious books and the rudimentary start of an alchemy kit, lovingly cared for and maintained. She also has a " walking stick" which is a carved bough from an apple tree.
M I N D; psyche, personality, general mentality.
Marilaine carries herself with a sense of confidence and assuredness. She knows what she is capable of and is not ashamed to feel pride in her abilities. That said, her confidence does not stem from arrogance but rather the crucible of having to pit herself again and again against the world at large. She has learned the hard way when she can when push a situation and when it is best to back off. Though sometimes it is hard to drop an argument without trying to get the final say, especially when it is something she feels strongly about. However, if the situation becomes life threatening, Marilaine will most likely retreat in order to live and fight another day.
She also has an agile and sound mind to go with her strong will and confidence. It is something that has allowed her to live as a mage in secret without ever having to undergo a Harrowing. Her mental aplomb gives her and edge in handling stressful situations without falling completely apart, so long as it is a physical threat. In the social arena, she is somewhat lacking in terms of refined graces or a willingness to admit when she is wrong.
With all her confidence also comes independence. She does not act much like a second class citizen. While she is not ashamed of her elven heritage in the slightest, she also does little to embrace it. Although she did not grow up in an alienage, she still knows what persecution is like, especially at the hands of those who think they are fundamentally better by way of birth alone. It is for that reason that her respect must be earned in action and deed. People who do prove themselves often find Marilaine to be a steadfast ally. Because of how she was raised, Marilaine tends not to be a team player. Joining the inquisition was a step outside the norm for her. However, helping to prevent the destruction of the word trumps comfort zones.
Marilaine's faith lies mostly in herself and her abilities. She has fought long and hard to be beholden to no one but herself and thus has spent years perfecting this mentality. Most of it was spent in isolation or limited contact with the world at large. What social graces she has tends to be rusty. On occasion she does dust them off, usually when it is in her best interest to do so. At other times, Marilaine does not go out of her way to be intentionally rude (unless the person deserves it), she just cares less about it.
She is secretive by nature, keeping things close to the vest. She rarely makes a show of using her magic, and barely even speaks of her gifts beyond calling herself a "skilled gardener." Her magic is deeply personal to her because it was few things that was hers alone as a child.
S K I L L S; talents, powers, magics.
Primal Magic — She can summon an armor made of rock and dirt to cover her body in a shell which helps to protect against damage. She can also create a projectile of rock and earth to fire with extreme force at her target causing blunt for trauma or even sending the target flying back. In areas where there isn't sufficient plants to immobilize threats (or where the ground is too rocky for roots to penetrate) she can use the earth to immobilize her opponent instead.
Animal Affinity — Her gift towards animals allows her a greater leeway when encountering them. So long as she does not threaten or show an intent to harm, most creatures are content to let her pass unscathed so long as they are not angry, tainted or see her as a viable meal. She has no ability to communicate with or control animals.
Non-magical skills — Sewing, cooking, tracking in forested or mountain terrain, basic combat (punching kicking, fighting dirty, etc) reading and writing, herb-lore, basic alchemy, basic first-aid, haggling, gardening.

While she was still young, Marilaine discovered that she had a magical effect on plants. She managed to keep her gift a secret, knowing that if she told anyone, they would lock her up and she would never be free again. Eventually the orphanage's headmistress found out that she had some kind of skill with plants and decided to capitalize on it.
As soon as Marilaine was old enough, the headmistress sent her off into the service of a wealthy noble named Comte du Marchand's. There she was put to work for the glory of the estate's gardens. The head Gardener was quick to take credit for her work, creating a handy buffer so that no one paid much attention to Marilaine or her skill. Marilaine didn't fool everyone however.
Her skills soon caught the attention of a mage fondly called Solemn by the Comte. Solemn was on loan to help with the Comtesse's wasting sickness. He discovered that Marilaine was a hedge mage, but rather than turn her in, he began to teach her what he knew about alchemy and herbalism. Where he could, he also tutored her in magical theories and practical applications in order for her to have some structured education.
As Marilaine grew more confident of her abilities and skill with plants, she began to challenge the head gardener for recognition of her skill. He in turn had her beaten on more than one occasion for impertinence. However, every beating fuelled Marilaine's anger and her determination to gain acknowledgement of her skills. She stopped tending the garden used her abilities to wither plants until the Comte finally fired the head gardener for incompetence.
Young as she was, Marilaine petitioned the comte then and managed to convince him to give her the position as head gardener. This earned her more ire from the former head gardener who again beat her and cut her face with a broken bottle. As the Comte's gardens once again became the talk of the local nobles, Marilaine fell under more and more scrutiny. One night when the comtesse joked about Marilaine's touch being magical, she knew that it was time to leave.
As daunting as striking out on her own was, Marilaine had no desire to get caught. She left the services of the Comte and set out on her own. Initially, she wandered the wilds living free and content to explore. However, it was growing more and more difficult to navigate the Dales as the civil war between Empress Celene and Grand Duke Gaspard ramped up.
Marilaine eventually decided her luck might be better on the other side of the Frostbacks and started toward Ferelden, only as she was crossing the mountains, the events of the Breach began, causing her to turn back and seek shelter in what was familiar. When the breach was closed Marilaine once again ventured across the Frostbacks, this time seeking out the Inquisition in the hopes that she might be of service.

H I S T O R Y; times that made them, that broke them.
Marilaine was born in 9.13 in the month of Cloudreach to her mother Eloni and an unknown servant. Her mother worked for fairly well-to-do lord by the name of Beauchene who had an estate in the Dales. However, Eloni was never in the best of health and it wasn't long before she passed away while Marilane was still very young. Lord Beauchene did not want to keep an elven child on hand, so sent her to the nearest orphanage. Once there the orphanage raised her, teaching her the basic skills she would need as a servant. While she was still young, Marilaine discovered that she had a magical effect on plants.
